The population is about 16.926 million. The Zhuang is an ethnic group with the largest population among the ethnic minorities in China. The Zhuang people mainly live in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province. A few Zhuang people live in Guangdong, Hunan, Guizhou, Sichuan and other provinces. They use the Zhuang language which belongs to the Zhuang-Tai branch of Zhuang-Dong languages of the Sino-Tibetan language family. The language is divided into two dialects, the south and the north. In the Southern Song Dynasty, folk characters were once created on the basis of Chinese characters, but they were not standardised. In 1955, the Zhuang script was created based on the Latin alphabets. There is a large number of people who use Chinese. The Zhuang people are mainly engaged in agricultural production, growing rice and corn. In the past, they mostly worshiped the natural and polytheistic primitive religion. After the Tang and Song Dynasties, Buddhism and Taoism were successively introduced into the Zhuang area. In modern times, Christianity and Catholicism were also introduced into the Zhuang area, but the impact was relatively small. The Zhuang area is known as the "Gehai" (sea of songs), and Liu Sanjie, who is known as the "celestial singer", is a typical representative of Zhuang folk singers. Every farming breaks, holidays, festivals, weddings or funerals, an antiphonal singing event takes place in the Zhuang area, and Zhuang people call it "the market of songs". Especially during the Song Festival on the third day of the third lunar month every year, young men and women are dressed in festive costumes and sing folk songs. The number of people ranges from hundreds to even tens of thousands, making the beautiful Zhuang region a sea of songs.
