The population is about 11 thousand. The Monpa mainly reside in the Menyu areas in the southeast of the Tibet Autonomous Region and a few of them live in the Medog area. The Monpa language is used which belongs to the Tibetan branch of Tibeto-Burman languages of the Sino-Tibetan language family. Since the Monpa people live in Tibet and have close interactions with the Tibetans, they are largely proficient in the Tibetan language. The Monpa ethnic group does not have its own script and the Tibetan characters are commonly used. Monpa is an ethnic group which is rich in oral literature. They have “Sama”, the drinking songs which reflect their life, customs, psychology, will and wish; “Jialu”, the love songs which reflect the pure love between lovers; and “Dongsanba”, the epithalamium. The Monpa people are mainly engaged in agricultural production, animal husbandry and hunting. Along with other ethnic groups, the Monpa people have attained a significant development in economy and culture in recent years. The Monpa people normally believe in the Tibetan Buddhism and a few of them believe in primitive religion. They use the Tibetan calendar. The New Year’s Day in Tibetan calendar is the most important festival of the Monpa people. During the festival, all villagers dance and sing in a spacious place, performing a Monpa drama called “Cuomu”. They also celebrate the “Wangguo Festival” every July.
