Introduction

The population is about 8.354 million. The Tujia people are mainly distributed in the Wuling Mountain area adjacent to Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan and Guizhou, that is the western part of Hunan Province, the western part of Hubei Province, and the counties of Youyang, Xiushan, Qianjiang, Shizhu and Pengshui in Sichuan Province. They use the Tujia language which belongs to the Tibeto-Burman languages of the Sino-Tibetan language family. There are two dialects, the south and the north. Since the Tujia people have long lived with the Han people, most of them can speak and use Chinese. The agricultural production, economy and education of the Tujia are well-developed and advanced. Their culture and art are diverse and rich with a variety of folk music and dance. Their labour songs, folksongs and swing dance are very popular. "Daliuzi" is known as "the symphony of the Tujia people". “Xilan Kapu” is a traditional handicraft with exquisite weaving and beautiful colours. It has been famous since ancient times. Tujia people worship their ancestors and believe in polytheism. Their main festivals are "the eighth day of the fourth lunar month", "the sixth day of the sixth lunar month" and "Tujia New Year". The most important one is the "Tujia New Year", commonly known as "Gannian", which is held one day ahead of the New Year of the Han ethnic group. It usually takes place on the twenty-ninth day of the twelfth month of the lunar calendar if the twelfth month has 30 days or on the twenty-eighth day of the twelfth month of the lunar calendar if the twelfth month has 29 days.
