The population is about 1.934 million. The majority live in Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province. The rest reside in other areas of Yunnan Province, Bijie region of Guizhou Province, Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province and Sangzhi County of Hunan Province. The Bai people have their own language which belongs to the Yi branch of Tibeto-Burman languages of Sino-Tibetan language family with three kinds of dialects, the south, the central and the north. Most of the Bai people use the Bai language and are proficient in Chinese. The Bai people once used the square-block characters based on Chinese characters to record the Bai language starting from the Tang dynasty. Owing to the interaction between the Bai and Han people, the former have learned the advanced Han culture for long time, and so the Bai language contains a lot of vocabulary from Chinese and the Chinese characters have been used by the Bai people at an early stage. The Bai people have high standard in agricultural development. More than 90% of the people are engaged in agricultural production. The Bai people worship “Ngel zex” that is similar to local gods and believe in Buddhism. The “March Street Festival”, also named “Guanyin Fair”, is an important festival and fair of the Bai ethnic group. The festival originally had religious purpose. Later, it gradually becomes a huge fair for exchange of goods. The “Torch Festival” is another significant day of the Bai ethnic group, which is a festive activity carrying the wish for the prosperity and security of the country and people, good weather, abundant harvest and thriving of domestic animals.
