Rua dos Faitiões (Rua de Arroz)
Rua dos Faitiões is also known as “Rice Street”, or “Salted Fish Street”. It is located in the Parish of Santo António, starting from the place between no. 20A and no. 22A of Rua do Tarrafeiro and ending in Rua da Tercena. It is close to Beco dos Faitiões and Pátio da Tercena.
The name of the street was first recorded in “Boletim Oficial do Governo da Província de Macau e Timor” published on 26 July 1869. The word “Faitiões” in its Portuguese name is the transliteration of the Cantonese phrase “快艇”(Fai Teang, meaning fast boat), which was originated from the “Fai Teang Incident” (also known as “Fai Teang Uprising”, or “18 Massacre”) in Macao’s history.
As for its other name “Rice Street”, it was originated from the fact that there used to be many rice shops on this street and the nearby streets. This area reached its prime in 1960s and 1970s, during which a dozen of rice shops such as Weng Cheong Long and Lun Cheong Long were opened, and this was a major characteristic of the street.
In Macao, many of the older generations call it “Salted Fish Street”. The salted fish refers to “Hou Kong Salted Fish”. During the first half of the 20th century, as the business flourished, sellers of salted fish were mostly located in the inner harbour area, in particular in Rua dos Faitiões, hence the name.
