Introduction

The Laboratory Division is a division directly affiliated to the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM). The major functions include monitoring the water quality of drinking water, swimming pools and beaches, food testing, assisting other public departments and entities in conducting research and laboratory tests, and supporting other IAM’s subsidiary units in carrying out tests.

The Laboratory Division is equipped with advanced testing devices and equipment. including liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS), liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LC/ICP/MS), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS), ion chromatography (IC), High-purity germanium gamma ray spectrometer, immuno diagnostic assay system (VIDAS), automated microbial identification system (VITEK), automated food quality indicator testing system (TEMPO), real-time polymerase chain reaction instrument (RT-PCR), sequencing System (MiSeq), etc.

In addition to expanding the scope of services, the Laboratory Division has been striving to improve the testing level and the technical capabilities of technicians. High-performance advanced scientific devices have been introduced continuously to meet requirements in order to improve and consolidate the testing level. At the same time, with a rigorous, scientific and fair attitude, professional, reliable and accurate testing services are provided to safeguard water and food safety for the public.

The Laboratory Division obtained the ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory accreditation certificate in 2003. In order to meet the requirements of international standards, the Laboratory keeps improving and optimizing the testing capability, providing technical support for relevant tests, and continuous increasing accredited parameters for water and food testing. Through maintaining and strengthening of the laboratory management systems, thus help forward our quality management, technique and service to a higher level.

In order to ensure the reliability and accuracy of test results, the Laboratory has established a precise management system and implemented a series of quality control measures, including participating annually in the proficiency testing program organized by national and foreign recognized authorities. Satisfactory results have been obtained, showing that the testing capability of the Laboratory fulfils the requirements.
