The Basic Law of the Macao Special Administrative Region (Macao SAR) is formulated in accordance with the Constitution of the People's Republic of China. It is the fundamental law of the Macao SAR. Safeguarding state sovereignty and territorial integrity on the one hand and granting Macao a high degree of autonomy on the other hand, it is a manifestation of the guiding principle of “One Country, Two Systems” and the Central Government’s basic policies towards Macao. The formulation of the Basic Law is deeply rooted in history and of momentous practical significance. On 13th April 1987, the Chinese and the Portuguese Governments signed the Joint Declaration on the Question of Macao, confirming that the Government of the People's Republic of China would resume the exercise of sovereignty over Macao on 20th December 1999, thus fulfilling the Chinese people’s long-term wish to recover Macao. Since Macao’s return, the Macao SAR Government has fully implemented the guiding principle of “One Country, Two Systems” and the Macao Basic Law, providing a solid foundation for Macao’s social stability and harmony, rapid economic development, and the protection of residents’ basic rights.

The Commemorative Gallery of the Macao Basic Law has shouldered the responsibilities to preserve the historical traces and ensures that future generations will be aware of this process and the underlying reasons. In the gallery, the following exhibition zones are set up: “Foreword”, “Retrospective History of Macao”, “The Guiding Principle of One Country, Two Systems”, “Formulation and Implementation of the Macao Basic Law”, “The Constitution of the People’s Republic of China and the Macao Basic Law”, “Success of the Macao Basic Law”, “Promotion of the Macao Basic Law” and “Interactive Education Zone”. The historical background, drafting process and efforts of all walks of life to promote and practise the Macao Basic Law are introduced in details to the public, from which one can feel local residents’ love for Macao and the country.
