The population is about nine thousand. The Oroqen people mainly reside in the Daxing’anling and Xiaoxing’anling at the junction of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and Heilongjiang Province, especially in the Oroqen Autonomous Banner in the Hulunbuir City of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The Oroqen language belongs to the Tungusic branch of Manchu-Tungusic languages of the Altaic language family. The Oroqen people do not have their own script and they use Chinese characters. “Oroqen” is a self-proclaimed name of the ethnic group, which means the “people on the mountain” or “people with reindeers”. In the past, the Oroqen people mainly lived by hunting, supplemented by collection and fishing. At present, they are largely engaged in the production of agriculture, animal husbandry and side industries. In addition, they shoulder the important responsibility of forest fire protection and become protectors of the forest and wild animals. The Oroqen people believe in Shamanism with natural attributes and animism, and their religion is practised in the form of natural, totem and ancestor worship. “Shaman” (witch) is the messenger between God and human. The Oroqen families offer sacrifices to the God of Fire on the twenty-third day of the twelfth lunar month and during the “Spring Festival”.
