The population is about 21 thousand. The Deang people mainly reside in the Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture and Zhenkang, Gengma, Yongde, Baoshan and Lancang counties of Yunnan Province. With a distribution area of more than 30,000 square kilometres, Deang is an ethnic group which has wide dispersion and small-scale concentrations. The language used by the Deang people belongs to the Wa-Deang branch of South Asian language family. The language includes three dialects: Naang, Bulei and Ruomai. Most Deang people are familiar with the language of Dai, Han or Jingpo. They do not have their own script but most of them can use the Chinese and the Dai script. They are mainly engaged in the agricultural production and especially good at growing tea trees. The Deang people believe in the Theravada Buddhism and most of the villages have their own temples. In addition, they also believe in primitive religion. Their main festivals include “Water Splashing Festival”, “Door Closing Festival”, “Door Opening Festival”, “Zuobai”, “Burning White Firewood”, etc., most of which carry religious connotations.
