Estrada da Baía de Nossa Senhora da Esperança
Estrada da Baía de Nossa Senhora da Esperança was officially named by the Provisional Municipal Council of the Islands (CMIP) on 1 November 2001. It is a bidirectional, four-lane road that runs east-west from Rotunda do Istmo to Rotunda da Piscina Olímpica, about 1,400 metres long and 50 metres wide.
“Nossa Senhora da Esperança” in Portuguese means “Our Lady of Hope”; “Baía” means “bay”; and “Estrada” means “road”. It is named after the religious figure Mary, Mother of Jesus.
“Baía de Nossa Senhora da Esperança” refers to the Wetland Ecological Viewing Zone, also known as the Mangroves Wetland, which lies in the west of the water body opposite the Taipa Houses-Museum in Taipa and in the north section of Estrada da Baía de Nossa Senhora da Esperança. Covering an area of 4,500 square metres, the wetland is one of the most important wetland ecological zones in Macao, famous for its proximity to Estrada da Baía de Nossa Senhora da Esperança.
The resident-friendly “automatic pedestrian walking system” in Estrada da Baía de Nossa Senhora da Esperança is the first touring and walking system in Macao, about 250 metres long, linking the Taipa Houses-Museum and Cotai via the Mangroves Wetland ecological zone. With this facility, the old town is well connected with the newly reclaimed land of Cotai.
