Istmo de Ferreira do Amaral
Istmo de Ferreira do Amaral runs from the Portas do Cerco Square in the north to Estrada do Arco in the south. It is a straight road of 483 metres long and varies from 6 metres to 10 metres in width. In 1869, the road was named “Istmo de Ferreira do Amaral” in commemoration of the late Macao Governor Ferreira do Amaral who was assassinated by a Chinese. In the second year of reign of Emperor Wanli of Ming dynasty (1574), the Ming government constructed a Chinese-style gate tower on the causeway that connected Macao Peninsula with Mainland China as a demarcation between the Chinese and Portuguese rule as well as a defensive gateway. By early 1870s, the Portuguese administration of Macao pulled down the gate tower by force and built a towering border gate, which lasts till present, in the form of a triumphal arch further north of the site of the demolished gate tower. Nowadays, the Service Building of Associação de Agricultores de Macau and its affiliated Choi Nong Chi Tai School (campus building) are located to the left of the road and the Areia Preta Triangle Garden lies at the southern end.
