The population is about 1.831 million. The majority live in Jilin Province, some in Heilongjiang Province and Liaoning Province, and a minority reside in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The largest habitation area is the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in Jilin Province. The Koreans have their own language and writing system. The Korean language belongs to the Altaic language family (controversial) with six dialects. The Korean script is a kind of phonogram devised in 1444 under the auspices of Sejong the Great in Joseon Dynasty. The Koreans are an ethnic group with a higher level of cultural and economic development as well as a better material life among the ethnic minorities in China. They are renowned for their skills in growing rice in the cold north. Not many Koreans have religious belief, and only few of them believe in Buddhism, Christianity or Catholicism. The Korean festivals include the Spring Festival, Ching Ming Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, and Mid-Autumn Festival, etc. The Korean people value the respect for the elderly and care for the young. They have a variety of family celebrations such as the first birthday of children, the 60th birthday and the 60th marriage anniversary.
