The population is about four thousand. The Tatar people mainly reside in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region with concentrations in cities such as Yining, Tacheng and Urumqi, etc. Moreover, a few Tatar people also live in the farming and pastoral areas of Qitai, Jimsar and Altay counties. The Tatar language is used, which belongs to the western Xiong branch of Turkic languages of Altaic language family. Except for some old people using the Tatar language, most Tatar people normally use the local languages of Kazakh or Uyghur. The Tatar ethnic group has the script based on Arabic alphabets. However, as the Tatar people live together with the Kazakh and Uyghur people and they have close relationships, the scripts of these two ethnic groups are also commonly used by the Tatar people. The Tatar people believe in Islam. Their main festivals include “Eid al-Fitr”, “Eid al-Adha” and “Saban Festival” (also known as the “Plough Head Festival”). In particular, the “Saban Festival” is celebrated annually during the breaks of farming from the twentieth to the twenty-fifth of June. The Tatar hold various sports competitions, singing and dancing to celebrate the festival.
