Introduction

The population is about 28 thousand. The Jing mainly reside on three small islands, namely Shanxin, Wanwei and Wutou, and their nearby areas in Fangchenggang City of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and so they are known as “Three Islands of the Jing”. Jing used to be called the “Yue” and its name was officially changed to “Jing” in 1958. The people use the Jing language but its language family is undetermined. It is basically similar to Vietnamese. Some Jing people speak Cantonese. They do not have their own script and they use the Chinese characters. The Jing people are mainly engaged in the marine fishing industry. They have rich marine knowledge and fishing experience. The Jing men are all skilful at fishing and have developed fish processing industry, aquaculture, hippocampal aquaculture and cultured pearl industries. The Jing people worship their ancestors and believe in gods which are mostly related to the ocean. The most significant festival in the customs of Jing is “Ha Festival”, also known as the “Singing Ha Festival”. “Ha” or “Singing Ha” means singing. Songs are sung by the singers “Ha sisters” in turn. The singing “Ha” activity lasts for three consecutive days and nights, and the people have feasts while singing. The date of “Ha Festival” varies from place to place. The two islands of Wanwei and Wutou celebrate this festival on the tenth day of the sixth lunar month, the Shanxin Island on the tenth day of the eighth lunar month, and the Hongkan Township on the twenty-fifth day of the first lunar month.
