The population is about 14 thousand. The Yugur mainly reside in the Sunan Yugur Autonomous County of Gansu Province and a few of them live in the Yugur village in Huangnibao of Jiuquan City. At present, the Yugur mainly use three languages: western Yugur language, belonging to the Turkic languages of Altaic language family; the eastern Yugur language, belonging to the Mongolian languages of Altaic language family; and Chinese. The Yugur ethnic group does not have its own script and the people normally use the Chinese characters. The Yugur people live in the Qilian Mountain areas and are mainly engaged in the livestock husbandry. Most of the Yugur people believe in Gelug. The “Spring Festival” is the most important traditional festival of the Yugur and they hold activities of worship of ancestors and stay up before the festival. During the festival, the Yugur make butter sculptures and exchange hada and gifts to express their best wishes. Furthermore, they also hold worship activities called “Diangeerhan” twice a year during spring and autumn, and celebrate the regular religious festivals in the first, second, fourth, sixth, ninth (or tenth) lunar months annually. Every tribe also has the activity of “Worship of Ebo” (called “Elei” in the Yugur language ), but the celebration date varies from tribe to tribe, normally on the second day of the second lunar month or the sixth day of the sixth lunar month. All men and women, young and old are allowed to participate.
