Introduction

The population is about 51 thousand. The Tajik people are mainly distributed in the southwest of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. They mainly reside in the Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County, and others in the counties of Shache, Yipu, Kargilik and Pishan. They use the Tajik language which belongs to the Pamir branch of Iranian languages of the Indo-European language family. The Tajiks in Shache and other places use Uyghur. The Uyghur script is widely used. In the past, the Tajik people were mainly engaged in animal husbandry and agriculture and lived a semi-nomadic and semi-settled life. With the strong support of the country in recent decades, the economy of the Tajik ethnic group has developed rapidly, and the people’s material and cultural lives have improved significantly. The Tajik people generally believe in Islam. Their ethnical and religious festivals include the "Kurban Bairam", "Spring Festival", "Baroti Festival", "Nowruz", "Seeding Festival", " Water Diversion Festival” and so on. Among them, the “Spring Festival” is celebrated in March when the grass sprouts every year. On the early morning of the festival, a child takes a cow to walk around the house. The owner sprinkles flour on the back of the cow and pull it out of the house after feeding it a little cake. Then, all family members enter in succession, visiting and greeting each other. The women sprinkle flour on the left shoulder of the guests as a sign of their good luck.
