The population is about 120 thousand. The Blang people mainly reside in Menghai and Jinghong in the Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan Province, and Shuangjiang, Yongde, Yunxian and Gengma in Linchang region as well as Lancang and Mojiang in Simao region. The language of Blang is used, which belongs to the Blang branch of the Mon-Khmer languages of the South Asian language family. They have two dialects: Blang and Aerwa. Some of the Blang people speak the language of Dai, Wa or Chinese. The Blang people do not have their own script and some of them use Chinese and Dai scripts. The Blang are mainly engaged in agricultural production and good at planting tea trees. Their living areas are famous for producing Pu’er tea. In the past, most of the Blang people believed in the Theravada Buddhism and worshipped their ancestors with festive activities such as “Door Opening Festival”, “Door Closing Festival”, “Offering Sacrifices to Buddha” and “Piling Sand”. The “Hounan Festival” is a major festival of the Blang people, and it is celebrated on the seventh day after the Ching Ming Festival in the third lunar month, that is between the 13th and the 15th of April. The major festive activity is splashing water at each other. The rituals are performed completely in accordance with the ancient tradition of the Blang ethnic group. The day is also known as the festival to welcome the sun.
