The population is about 132 thousand. The Daur people reside mostly in the Morin Dawa Daur Autonomous Banner of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the nearby banners and counties, and Qiqihar suburb and its nearby counties in Heilongjiang Province. A small number of Daur people live in Tacheng City of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. The Daur have their own language, which belongs to the Mongolian languages of the Altaic language family and includes two vernaculars, Buteha and Qiqihar. This language has a large number of vocabulary related to fishing, husbandry, hunting and farming activities, including loanwords from Chinese, Manchu and Ewenki, in particular from Chinese. The language does not have its own script. The Daur people mainly use Chinese characters and a few people can use Manchu, Mongolian and Kazakh scripts. Daur is an ethnic group with a long history and agricultural culture in northern China. The people call themselves “Daur”, meaning “the cultivator”. They believe in shamanism, which is a primitive religion combining the worship of the nature, totems and ancestors. A few Daur people believe in Tibetan Buddhism. The “Spring Festival” is the biggest festival of the Daur ethnic group, during which they dress up and visit families and friends to give New Year greetings. Women also exchange gifts during the festival.
