The population is about 148 thousand. The majority of them live in the mountain areas of counties such as Luxi, Ruili, Longchuan, Yingjiang and Lianghe in Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan Province. A few reside in the mountain areas in nearby counties and prefectures. They use the Jingpo language which belongs to the Jingpo branch of Tiberto-Burman languages of Sino-Tibetan language family. The Jingpo ethnic group has its own script. It is a kind of phonogram based on Latin alphabets. The Jingpo people are mainly engaged in agricultural production, and the major crops they grow are rice and corns. In the past, most of the Jingpo people believed in animistic primitive polytheism. In recent decades, a small number of them believe in Christianity. The religious rituals of the Jingpo ethnic group are mainly associated with agriculture, including the ground breaking ceremony, eating new rice, harvest feast, etc. The large-scale worship activity “Munao” has now become an annual festival for the Jingpo ethnic group, the “Munao Festival”.
