Rua das Hortas
Rua das Hortas starts near the edifice at no. 43 Estrada da Areia Preta near Travessa das Hortas and ends on the north-eastern slope of Mong Há Hill. It is a small road without any exit, about 70 metres long and approximately 3 metres wide, located in the Parish of Nossa Senhora de Fátima, in the north of the Macao Peninsula. Its name was recorded in “Cadastro das Vias Públicas de Macau” (Cadastre of Public Roads of Macao) published in 1993.
The Portuguese term “Hortas” means “farmland”. From the mid-1940s to the early-1960s when agricultural development in Macao was in its heyday, the district of Areia Preta where Rua das Hortas was situated was one of the most important vegetable growing areas.
At the end of the road, there is a small Tou Tei Temple built in the district of Areia Preta, where there is a couplet that reads: “蓮峰山神位,泰山石敢當” (Mount Lin Fung the place of god, Mount Tai Seak Kam Tong). Inside the temple, there is a statue of Tou Tei (God of Earth). Outside the temple, the statues of Kuan Kong (God of War), Kun Iam (Goddess of Mercy), and Fu, Lu and Shou (Gods of Prosperity, Status and Longevity) are worshipped.
Rua das Hortas is short with no high-rises on both sides. There are small food shops at one end of the road and the other end is linked to Mong Há Hill. With no heavy traffic, the road features authentic reality by looking through from one end to the other. Neighbours living around greet each other, being a familiar feeling of human kindness.
