Azinhaga dos Piratas
Azinhaga dos Piratas is located in the southwest of the Parish of São Francisco Xavier, with a length of about 30 metres and varying widths ranging from 1 to 3 metres. Paved with cement, it runs east-west from Rua das Gaivotas to Pátio das Flores. “Piratas” in Portuguese means “pirates”. Its record can be found in “Taipa and Coloane” published in 1981 authored by Jesuit priest Manuel Teixeira.
Legend has it that Azinhaga dos Piratas was once used by pirates as a path to enter and flee from Coloane. Pirates, also known as freebooters, made frequent appearances in Sanzao and Hengqin, Xiangshan County, in history. Adjacent to Hengqin, the island of Coloane became a haven for pirates. In 1910, as a result of the “Coloane Incident”, the pirates “disappeared” from the island.
The region where Azinhaga dos Piratas is located was once referred to as the Coloane Village, one of the oldest villages in Coloane. As the downtown area of Coloane, it is now home to landmarks such as Escola Superior das Forças de Segurança de Macau, Coloane Municipal Market, and Largo do Presidente António Ramalho Eanes, receiving a large number of visitors.
