Rua do General Rodrigues
Rua do General Rodrigues, located in the west of the Parish of São Lázaro, starts in Rua de Afonso de Albuquerque and ends in Rua do Bispo Medeiros. It is a cement road with a slight slope, about 127 metres long and approximately 5 metres wide, which runs from the northeast to the southwest.
As part of Travessa da Cotovia and Travessa da Esperança, which do not exist nowadays, Rua do General Rodrigues was first recorded on 1 May 1929 in documents of the meeting of the Municipal Council of Macao.
In 1916, General Rodrigues founded an import and export company named “F. Rodrigues” in Macao. It was expanded by the eldest son of General Rodrigues, Fernando de Senna Fernandes Rodrigues, becoming one of the most famous family businesses in Macao. On 10 July 1945, Fernando de Senna Fernandes Rodrigues was shot after attending a funeral service at St. Miguel Arcanjo Cemetery and died the following day. Due to his death, the business of the company was suspended. Later, the second son of Fernando de Senna Fernandes Rodrigues, Humberto Fernando Rodrigues succeeded the company and founded F. Rodrigues (Successors) Limited on 26 December 1947.
Now, the street is lined with five- and six-storey buildings used for both commercial and residential purposes. The ground floor of such buildings is mostly used as hardware, clothes and jewellery stores.
