Largo de Santo Agostinho, located in the Parish of São Lourenço, is a small square on Mó Hill (磨盤山). Recorded in “Cadastro das Vias Públicas de Macau” (Cadastre of Public Roads of Macao) published in 1925, its Chinese name “崗頂” is an alternative name of Mó Hill (磨盤山) and its Portuguese name “Largo de Santo Agostinho” means “St. Augustine’s Square”.
Largo de Santo Agostinho is surrounded by historic buildings such as St. Joseph’s Seminary, Dom Pedro V Theatre, St. Augustine’s Church, and Sir Robert Ho Tung Library. In 2005, it was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Historic Centre of Macao. The St. Joseph’s Seminary is the cradle of Catholicism in the East. As one of the major activities of Macao’s Catholic Church, the “Procession of the Passion of Our Lord, the God Jesus” is held every year by the St. Augustine’s Church. The Dom Pedro V Theatre was the first Western-style theatre built in China. The Sir Robert Ho Tung Library is a garden library that boasts historical, cultural and architectural value.
Matching its surrounding buildings perfectly, Largo de Santo Agostinho features a typical style of Southern Europe with Portuguese pavements, dark green pavilion, umbrella-shaped banyans, and several wooden benches. Tranquil and quiet, it is an ideal place for chat and rest.
