Public participation is essential to maintaining a healthy and clean urban environment. The Mong Ha Eco-Centre was established not only to draw the public’s attention to the hygiene of their living environment but also to enhance, through educational and promotional activities in an interactive learning environment, our next generations’ knowledge of mankind’s living environment and Macao’s urban cleaning facilities, in an effort to reach its goal of building a beautiful and clean city. The Mong Ha Eco-Centre, which is the first environmental information centre launched by the Municipal Affairs Bureau, has been open to the public since 14 March 1999. The centre was expanded in 2009 into the new Mong Ha Eco-Centre re-opened in 2010, providing better space for learning and visit by the public and students. The two-storey centre, with a height of 8.9 meters, offers an area of 540 m2 for the public to use and visit. Besides, it features an environmentally friendly design adopting a host of green elements, such as the transparent arched ceiling in the centre that lets in natural light, the indoor vertical greenery system, aquaponics system and so on to minimise the energy consumption in the centre and create an eco-friendly environment.
